Inflammatory News (Repost)
The Face Of The Occupation Just Got Uglier
by [info]insomnia

Last night, CBS' 60 Minutes Two aired allegations—supported by numerous photographs and witnesses—that document numerous cases of torture and abuse of Iraqi prisoners inside Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

Amongst the photographs were pictures of prisoners with wires attached to their genitals, prisoners stacked in a pyramid, prisoners forced to simulate oral sex on others, and prisoners who appear to have been beaten to death.

The New York Times is now covering this story. A total of 17 soldiers, including a brigadier general, have been removed from duty as a result, and Court-Martials are in the works for at least six soldiers. At least one of those charged blames the military for staffing the prison with reservists, not providing them with procedures for running the facility, and not educating them on the proper treatment of prisoners.

More bad and potentially inflammatory news at a bad time. The pictures are already circulating out there and other articles are already in the works, so it's a safe bet that the pictures will be broadcast on Arab television very shortly—just like they were on CBS.

Of course, there is deafening silence over at [info]conservatism and the other bastions of righteousness, although you can rest assured that if our POWs were ever treated like this, they'd be howling like rabid banshees—as would I.

Like Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt very correctly stated:

"If we can't hold ourselves up as an example of how to treat people with dignity and respect, we can't ask that other nations do that to our soldiers."

This Iraqi prisoner had electrical wires wrapped around his
arms, his legs, and his testicles. He was told that if he
stepped off the box, that he would be electrocuted.

They were forced to get up on one of another in a
pyramid, with bags over their heads.

They're in that pyramid, bodies stacked up on one
another, and those two soldier guards are grinning like it's
some big fun game to play with the prisoners.

They were forced to do oral sex on each other at
gunpoint.

A big, wide smile on the woman's face as she does a
thumbs-up and points at the exposed genitals of the Iraq
man with his two other prisoners sitting on the ground with
bags over their heads.

Again, there are the smiles and the thumbs-up gesture
while the Iraqi man huddles on the bodies of his other
prisoners in that pyramid.

This is the body of an Iraqi man who died of beatings at
the hands of the American soldiers.

It amazes me that people are actually shocked over this. This is war boys and girls. Those prisoners where lucky that they were not severely tortured.

What? Did you people actually think that those in war follow Geneva Convention? The G.C. has been a front for people like you. All across the world this crap goes on EVERY DAY so get over it.

I would probably bet that this was the least, how you people put it, disturbing things that went on over in Iraq. Amazing how people cry over those prisoners. Those prisoner whom themselves, were responsible for extreme inhuman acts towards other innocent human lives. Heck, In South America atrocities towards humanity are 100xfold compared to the Middle East.

I am sickened by looking at these photos just like everybody else, but it's good that they are spreading the internet because I think the American public has the right to know what is happening in the world. but since when did 17 out of hundreds of thousands of American troops become "the face of the occupation"? Do you really believe that these few photos paint an accurate picture of how what's going on in Iraq?
Secondly, what do you mean "if our POWs were ever treated like this, they'd be howling like rabid banshees—as would I" do you read the news? Are you aware the mere weeks ago the bodies of dead American soldiers were being dragged through the streets? I don't think you'd ever post THOSE photos in your livejournal. The top headline on CNN as I write this is "More than half of Iraqis surveyed said their nation will be better off in five years because of the U.S.-led invasion" You'd delete your journal before you ever posted that article. Seriously now, if you're only gonna give 1/2 the story then what you're doing is as narrow minded and 1-sided at what goes on at the conservatism community.

Read the above replied comments of mine, Jim. 17 of hundreds of thousands of soldiers does not represent a new face in of itself. The face of our occupation, in certain persons views like myself, has always been an ugly one. This, though, adds a massive blemish to said face due to the horrific nature of these tortures and humiliating acts.

If you read my journal enough you would know that I am constantly reading the news. It's my one habbit- the one hunger I cannot seem to eat enough for. The reason the photos of the 'US Contractors' were not posted on here was because they were a part of the mainstream media. There was unending coverage of those reports on ever news outlet known to man. Aside from the internet (mainly independant news sources and reposts just as this one) and from the CBS peice, did you seen any reports on this when it first broke two days ago? Read [info]aexia's reply above to the tortures and draggings of the Four.

You should read this journal more closely before posting next time, you'll seem less of a douchebag. I'm against the war in of itself for the reasons we supposedly went there in the first place. I agree with the liberation of the Iraqi people but disagree with the way we went about it and have hard feelings as to what our true motives are. I, just like you, want the better for human kind, save the fact that you come across ass someone whom would rather bash than debate. My journal is a debate forum for articles such as this.

And lastly, the above isn't "half" the story. It is the full story. There were soldiers whom tortured and abused Iraqi prisoners. They took pictures of it. What other side of the story is there?

"its non intellectual liberals like yourself that blow all this our of proportion"

You might want to ask someone their stance on politics before you point the finger, young (wo)man. I'm sure I can debate and conquer you on any one subject regarding the war or general news regardless of which side of the spectrum it's on.

You see, I'm what some people call a 'Republican.' I'm also what some people call a 'Democrat.'And I get shit from both sides because, unlike them, I don't take sides due to party affiliation. I make my decisions and answers on the issues and due to facts such as the hard factual evidence of the photos above.

It is hard-lined republicans such as yourself that have no intellectual basis. If you say you're basing your voice in fact then please read and answer the following:

1) How are the above photos faked?
a) what is your evidence that they are faked?
b) what is their purpose if they are not genuine?

Youre view on those whom have opinions contrary to yours is very worrisome. You claim and seem to embrace America yet you fully go against every bit of the foundation this country was built on. Ever person, just like yourself, is allowed to have an opinion. Sadly, to break it to you, if the general consensus of the nation was what determined our status as American citizens, well then, you'd be out of the country, my friend. After all, the majority of Americans oppose the war and George Bush is now losing in every major political poll, even those run by Republicans.

What to say other than "Oh what a lovely war"! and "Everything is fair in love and war". I found it interesting that one of those arrested said he had no direction from his commanders and was only shown the Geneva Convention on treating POW's or other prisoners after he was arrested. I wonder if those rules are handed out to the fighters in Falluja in jawi or arabic? "OK chaps, it's tea-time, so no more shooting for another hour. It says so right here in the book I got from Saddam when he was my best buddy; before he grew that taliban-esque beard. Later on we can clean our tools and go back and kill a few more infidels? What say you?" I can hear that resounding from the minarets of Falluja five times a day.

I am amazed also as to why the Mother of all armed forces didn't just level the city? Heck, Putin gets away with doing it in Grozny and look at the chechens; they only blew up 27 Russian conscripts before Christmas that year and their whole city and population was razed...There's nothing like a good 150mm in the morning - said the provost ot the POW.

Get the press out of the war zone, let the military do what is the most tasteless job known to man and then clear it up. The West is in a much better position to clear 'things' up than it is to tear them down. (Too many laws against bombing and shooting that the other side doesn't adhere to.)Heck we have the DoD... but we also have the UN REd Crescent, MSF, UAES, and the Mint can just spewing out dollars to finance it.

Ok had my rant, now you can flame me out.

I found it interesting that one of those arrested said he had no direction from his commanders and was only shown the Geneva Convention on treating POW's or other prisoners after he was arrested.

People don't want nor care to take responsibility for their actions. It's the natural way for humans- skirting the issue. We don't level cities because it's not what we're there to do. We're not there to kill and torture- just as most of the Iraqi people aren't attempting to slaughter us. You have to consider that a lot of the oppositions fighting is coming from rebel groups formed in outside countries and / or extremist groups that don't represent the majority of Iraqi's. I know you didn't mean that comment literally but I thought I might answer it just the same.

And there's no 'flaming out' here. My journal has always been a forum for every voice regardless of it's stance. My only hope is that people do it so basing their opinions on fact rather than emotion / party affiliation. But who am I kidding!
